Insects are small invertebrate animals that form the largest group within the arthropod phylum. They possess a segmented body, multiple pairs of jointed legs, and two antennae. They play crucial roles in various ecosystems as pollinators, decomposers, and food sources for other organisms. Some notable insect orders include Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), Coleoptera (beetles), Diptera (flies), and Hymenoptera (ants, bees, and wasps). Insects have been on Earth for over 300 million years and are estimated to contain around 90% of all animal species.
