Whales
Whales are large, marine mammals belonging to the infraorder Cetacea. Known for their immense size and distinctive features, such as a streamlined body, paddle-like limbs, and blowholes on top of their heads, whales inhabit various regions across the globe, diving deep into the ocean depths in search of food. There are two primary groups of whales: toothed whales (Odontoceti) and baleen whales (Mysticeti). Toothed whales, as their name suggests, possess teeth for capturing prey like fish and squid. Baleen whales, on the other hand, have a comb-like filter system called baleen plates that enable them to strain large volumes of water and extract tiny organisms such as plankton and krill. Whales communicate with complex vocalizations, using sounds like clicks, whistles, and songs to navigate, locate food, and socialize. They have a rich cultural history, being celebrated in various forms of art and literature throughout human civilization. Examples of whale species include the blue whale, sperm whale, humpback whale, orca (killer whale), and narwhal. Unfortunately, many whale populations are threatened due to factors like climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and human activities like hunting and ship collisions. Conservation efforts seek to protect these majestic creatures and their critical habitats for future generations to appreciate.
