Whales
Whales are marine mammals belonging to the infraorder Cetacea, characterized by their massive size, streamlined bodies, and distinctive blowholes used for breathing at the water's surface. They inhabit all of the world's oceans, with some species preferring colder waters near the poles while others thrive in warmer tropical or subtropical regions. Whales are known for their intelligence, complex social structures, and diverse communication methods, including vocalizations such as clicks, whistles, and songs. They feed on a variety of prey, from tiny krill to large fish, using specialized feeding techniques like baleen filtration or echolocation. There are two main groups of whales: toothed whales (Odontoceti) and baleen whales (Mysticeti). Toothed whales include species such as dolphins, porpoises, sperm whales, and beaked whales, while baleen whales encompass the largest animals on Earth, including blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales, and gray whales. Whales play a crucial role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems by regulating prey populations and contributing to nutrient cycling. Unfortunately, many whale species have been hunted to the brink of extinction for their valuable blubber, meat, and other products, leading to international protections and conservation efforts aimed at preserving these magnificent creatures for future generations.
