Orcas

Definition of Orcas as it relates to Animals, Marine Life, Marine Mammals, MarineMammals, Whales

Orcas, also known as killer whales, are apex predators in marine environments and are part of the dolphin family. They are easily recognized by their distinctive black and white color pattern and tall dorsal fin. Orcas exhibit complex social behaviors and have been observed working together in hunting strategies. They can be found in all oceans, but tend to prefer colder waters. As marine mammals, orcas share many characteristics with other whales, such as a streamlined body shape for fast swimming and breathing through blowholes on top of their heads. However, they are smaller than many baleen and toothed whales, reaching lengths of up to 30 feet and weighing up to 6 tons. Orcas play an important role in the marine ecosystem as apex predators, maintaining balance within the food chain and providing valuable insights into the health of oceanic environments.
