Orcas

Definition of Orcas as it relates to Animals, Mammals, Dolphins, Marine Mammals

Orcas, also known as killer whales, are the largest species in the dolphin family and among the most widely recognized marine mammals. They are easily identified by their distinctive black and white coloration, with a prominent white patch above and behind the eye. Adult males can reach lengths of up to 30 feet and weigh up to 6 tons, while females are smaller, typically measuring around 23 feet and weighing up to 4 tons. Orcas exhibit complex social structures and behaviors. They live in tightly-knit family groups called pods, which can consist of several generations of related animals. These pods have unique cultures, dialects, and hunting strategies that are passed down through the generations. Orcas feed on a wide variety of prey, including fish, seals, sea lions, and even large whales. In terms of their place in the hierarchy, orcas belong to the larger category of marine mammals, which is itself a subcategory of mammals, and more broadly animals. As dolphins, they are part of a group that includes other species such as bottlenose dolphins and porpoises. Orcas can be found in all oceans of the world, from the Arctic to Antarctica, but tend to prefer cooler waters. They are known for their intelligence, agility, and striking appearance, making them one of the most iconic marine mammals in the world.
