Definition of Art Movement as it relates to Art, Surrealism, Automatism

Surrealism is an artistic and literary movement that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by its exploration of the unconscious mind and dreams. It seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of reality and question the nature of existence through the use of unexpected juxtapositions and dreamlike imagery. Automatism, a technique used within Surrealism, involves creating art without conscious control or intention, often through the use of chance or spontaneous methods, in order to tap into the subconscious mind and reveal hidden truths. Surrealism as an art movement encompasses various mediums such as painting, sculpture, photography, film, literature, and theory, all united by their shared goal of transcending reality and exploring the irrational.
