Art Movement
Expressionist NeoExpressionism is an art movement characterized by a return to expressive figuration, emotional intensity and strong color after the dominance of abstraction in the mid-20th century. It combines elements of both Expressionism and NeoExpressionism, emphasizing subjective emotion, personal experience and individual perception, as well as a rejection of objective reality and formal conventions. The movement is known for its bold brushstrokes, exaggerated forms and heightened sense of drama, often depicting urban scenes and human figures with raw energy and emotional intensity. It emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a reaction against minimalism and conceptual art, and has been associated with artists such as Julian Schnabel, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.
