Futurism

Definition of Futurism as it relates to Art, Expressionist Art, Abstract Art

The CoBrA movement, an acronym derived from the initials of Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam, was a European avant-garde art movement that emerged in 1948. It was characterized by its emphasis on spontaneous, expressive brushwork, vibrant colors, and abstract forms, often inspired by folk art, children's art, and the art of mentally ill individuals. CoBrA artists sought to break away from traditional artistic conventions and explore new modes of expression that reflected their post-World War II experiences and perspectives. They aimed to create a more democratic and inclusive form of art that could be accessible to all people, regardless of social status or education. The movement was short-lived, disbanding in 1951, but it had a significant impact on the development of abstract expressionism, tachisme, and other post-war art movements.
