Stormwater management refers to the strategies and practices employed to mitigate the impact of rainfall on urban areas, with particular emphasis on controlling runoff, minimizing flooding, improving water quality, and restoring natural hydrologic patterns. The field integrates principles from architecture, landscape architecture, and land development to design systems that effectively manage stormwater at various scales, from individual sites to entire watersheds. It encompasses a wide range of techniques, including green infrastructure, low-impact development (LID), bioretention, permeable pavements, rain gardens, swales, and detention/retention basins. By emphasizing infiltration, evapotranspiration, and the use of vegetation and soils to treat runoff, stormwater management seeks to minimize the reliance on traditional gray infrastructure such as curbs, gutters, and piped systems, while promoting sustainable, resilient, and aesthetically pleasing environments.
