Walruses
Walruses are large marine mammals known for their distinctive tusks and whiskers. They belong to the family Odobenidae and the species Odobenus rosmarus, which is further divided into two subspecies: the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) and the Pacific walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens). Walruses are found primarily in the Arctic regions of Alaska, Canada, Russia, and Greenland. They spend most of their time in the water, where they feed on a diet of benthic invertebrates such as mollusks, worms, and crustaceans. On land, walruses are known for their social behavior and ability to rest and sleep while lying on ice floes. They have a thick layer of blubber that provides insulation and buoyancy in the water, as well as a highly-developed sense of touch that allows them to detect prey on the ocean floor. Walruses are an important cultural symbol for many indigenous Arctic communities, who rely on them for food, clothing, and other traditional uses. However, they are also vulnerable to threats such as climate change, habitat loss, and hunting, which have contributed to declining populations in some areas.
