Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are diverse underwater ecosystems found in warm, shallow waters around the world. They are formed over thousands of years by colonies of corals, which secrete a hard shell of calcium carbonate known as coral skeleton. This provides a stable structure for an array of marine life to thrive, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and various types of algae. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns of corals are created by tiny marine animals called polyps, which live in symbiosis with photosynthetic algae known as zooxanthellae. These algae provide the corals with energy and nutrients through photosynthesis, while the corals offer protection and a stable environment for the algae to grow. Coral reefs are often referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" because they host an estimated 25% of all marine species, despite covering less than 1% of the ocean floor. They provide essential services such as food, coastal protection, and tourism revenue for millions of people around the world. However, coral reefs are under threat from various human activities, including overfishing, pollution, and climate change, which can lead to mass bleaching events and reef degradation. Conservation efforts are essential to protect and preserve these valuable ecosystems for future generations.
