Olm

Olms are small, cave-dwelling animals found in Europe and South America. They belong to the family Proteidae and are the only living species of their kind. Often referred to as "cave salamanders," olms have adapted to their dark environments through the loss of pigmentation and the development of specialized sensory abilities, such as heightened senses of touch and smell. Olms have elongated bodies and can grow up to 12 inches in length. They have four legs with long, thin fingers, and a flat, paddle-like tail that helps them navigate through water. Their eyes are small and underdeveloped, as they rely more on their other senses to interact with their environment. Olms are aquatic creatures that spend most of their lives in underground streams and caves. They prefer cold, oxygen-rich water and can be found at depths ranging from a few feet to hundreds of feet below the surface. Olms feed primarily on small crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae. Interestingly, olms have an incredibly slow metabolism, which allows them to survive for extended periods without food. They can also go years without coming to the surface, making them one of the most elusive animals in their habitats. Olms are listed as a protected species due to their rarity and declining populations. Habitat destruction, pollution, and overcollection for the pet trade have contributed to their decline. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this fascinating and unique animal.
