DNA Replication, within the field of Cellular Biology DNA Replication, is the process by which a cell synthesizes new copies of its DNA prior to cell division. This critical step in the cell cycle ensures that each daughter cell receives an accurate and complete set of genetic information. In order for replication to occur, the double helix structure of DNA must first be unwound and separated, creating two single strands. Enzymes called helicases facilitate this process by breaking the hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs. Once exposed, each strand serves as a template for the synthesis of its complementary strand, through the action of enzymes known as polymerases. As new nucleotides are added to the growing strands, they form phosphodiester bonds, resulting in the formation of two new double helix structures. This process is highly accurate and tightly regulated, with multiple proofreading mechanisms in place to correct any errors that may occur. DNA replication plays a critical role in maintaining genomic stability, as well as driving cellular growth, development, and reproduction. As such, understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying this complex process is of central importance to the field of Cellular Biology DNA Replication, and has broad implications for the fields of Science and Life Science as a whole.
