Gene Expression
Gene expression refers to the process by which genetic information encoded within DNA is used to synthesize functional proteins and RNA molecules, ultimately regulating cellular function and phenotype. This complex and dynamic process involves multiple steps, including transcription of DNA into precursor messenger RNA (pre-mRNA), processing of pre-mRNA into mature mRNA, translation of the mRNA sequence into a polypeptide chain, and post-translational modification of the resulting protein. Gene expression is tightly regulated through various mechanisms, including transcriptional regulation by DNA-binding proteins, epigenetic modifications that alter chromatin structure, and RNA processing events.
