Synthetic Biology

Definition of Synthetic Biology as it relates to Science, Genetics, Gene Expression

Synthetic Biology refers to the application of engineering principles to biological systems design, construction and characterization. It involves the manipulation of genetic elements and pathways in order to understand their function, predict behavior and create new functions. By leveraging tools from genetics, molecular biology, and computational modeling, synthetic biologists aim to rationally design and build novel biological parts, devices, and systems that can perform specific tasks with high precision and efficiency. These synthetic constructs can be used for a wide range of applications such as biomedicine, biotechnology, energy, and environmental protection. Synthetic Biology therefore represents an important interface between the fields of science, genetics, and gene expression, where new knowledge about biological systems is generated through the design and construction of synthetic circuits that mimic natural processes or create entirely new functionalities.
