Zen Buddhism

Definition of Zen Buddhism as it relates to Religions, Confucianism, Chinese Thought

Zen Buddhism is a school of Mahayana Buddhism that originated in China during the Tang Dynasty, before spreading to other parts of East Asia. It emphasizes direct, experiential realization through meditation and mindfulness, rather than relying solely on scripture or doctrine. In Chinese Thought, Zen Buddhism is known as Chan, and it has had a significant influence on Chinese philosophy and culture. Confucianism, another major component of Chinese Thought, also intersected with Zen Buddhism in various ways, particularly in the areas of ethics and self-cultivation. As such, Zen Buddhism can be seen as a unique expression of Religions within the context of Chinese Thought and Confucianism, one that values intuition, introspection, and personal transformation.
