Definition of Bioinformatics as it relates to Science, Genetics, Systems Biology

Bioinformatics involves the development and application of computational approaches for managing, analyzing, and interpreting large-scale molecular biology data, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. It is closely related to systems biology as it seeks to understand biological systems at the molecular level by integrating diverse data types and using computational models to simulate and predict system behavior. Bioinformatics also has strong ties to genetics, as it enables the analysis of genetic variation and its impact on phenotype, as well as to science more broadly, as it applies fundamental principles from mathematics, computer science, and statistics to address biological questions. Overall, bioinformatics represents a powerful toolset for advancing our understanding of complex biological systems and their underlying mechanisms.
