Pharmacology

Definition of Pharmacology as it relates to Science, Medicine, Biology

Pharmacology is the study of how substances, specifically drugs, interact with living organisms to produce a change in function. It lies at the intersection of biology and chemistry, and is integral to the development of modern medicine. As a subdiscipline of biology, pharmacology investigates the effects of drugs on biological systems, seeking to understand their mechanisms of action at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels. This knowledge is then applied in the context of medicine, where it informs the design, delivery, and safe use of therapeutic agents. In this way, pharmacology bridges the gap between basic scientific research and clinical practice, driving innovation in healthcare and improving patient outcomes.
