Machine Learning

Definition of Machine Learning as it relates to Science, Mathematics, Theoretical Computer Science

Machine learning, as a component of theoretical computer science and mathematics, is a methodological discipline concerned with designing algorithms capable of discerning patterns in data without explicit programming. In essence, machine learning embodies computational approaches to pattern recognition, clustering, regression, dimensionality reduction, feature selection, anomaly detection, and other tasks where human expertise alone proves insufficient for processing large and unwieldy datasets. It is an evolving field that seeks to expand the frontiers of artificial intelligence by developing models capable of autonomously learning from data and subsequently generating predictions or decisions based on these learned models. Machine learning has applications spanning numerous domains, including natural language understanding, computer vision, speech recognition, bioinformatics, finance, marketing, and more, thereby underscoring its significance as a foundational discipline within the broader context of theoretical computer science.
