Definition of Biblical Studies as it relates to Education, Religious Education, Theology

Biblical Studies: The academic discipline dedicated to the critical analysis and interpretation of religious texts within the context of Judaism and Christianity, specifically focused on the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) and the New Testament. Scholars in this field employ historical-critical, literary, and theological approaches to explore the composition, authorship, language, genre, structure, themes, and theological concepts found within these texts. Biblical Studies also seeks to understand the cultural, social, political, and religious milieu of the ancient Near East and Greco-Roman world in which these scriptures were produced, transmitted, and received. Additionally, it involves engaging with various interpretive traditions, both historical and contemporary, that have shaped the reception and understanding of biblical texts throughout history. Ultimately, Biblical Studies strives to enhance our comprehension of the religious beliefs, practices, and values of ancient Israelites and early Christians, as well as their relevance for contemporary theological reflection and ethical discernment.
