Green Building

Definition of Green Building as it relates to Architecture, Sustainable Architecture, Living Building Challenge

Rainwater harvesting systems are architectural innovations designed to collect, filter, and store rainfall for later use. These systems promote sustainable architecture by reducing reliance on municipal water sources and mitigating stormwater runoff. They typically consist of a catchment area, such as a rooftop, where rainwater is collected and directed into a storage tank or cistern via downspouts and gutters. Prior to storage, the water may pass through a filtration system to remove debris and impurities. Once in the storage tank, the water can be treated and used for various purposes, such as irrigation, flushing toilets, or even drinking, depending on the level of treatment. Greywater recycling systems, which reuse waste water from sinks, showers, and washing machines, can complement rainwater harvesting systems to further enhance water efficiency in sustainable architecture.
