Snakes

Definition of Snakes as it relates to Animals, Reptiles, Scaly Animals, Reptile Classification

Snakes are elongated, legless reptiles that belong to the order Serpentes. They are found on every continent except Antarctica and are known for their ability to shed their skin (molting) and their unique means of locomotion. Snakes are carnivorous and can be classified as constrictors, venomous, or both. Constrictors kill their prey by wrapping their bodies around it and squeezing until the animal can no longer breathe. Venomous snakes use specialized teeth to inject venom into their prey, causing paralysis or death. Snakes play a crucial role in controlling rodent populations and are an important part of many ecosystems. As members of the Reptile Classification, they share characteristics with other reptiles such as scales, egg-laying, and cold-bloodedness, but their unique features set them apart within the Scaly Animals subcategory of Reptiles.
