Cryptobranchids
Cryptobranchids, also known as hellbenders and Asian giant salamanders, are a group of large, fully aquatic salamanders. They are characterized by their flattened bodies, fringed external gills, and strong, muscular tails that help them navigate the swift currents of the rivers they inhabit. These amphibians have a keen sense of touch and are able to detect prey and predators using their lateral line system, which is similar to that found in fish. Cryptobranchids are long-lived animals, with some individuals known to live for over 50 years in the wild. They play an important role in their ecosystems as both predators and indicators of water quality. The group includes several species, such as the eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) and the Japanese giant salamander (Andrias japonicus).
