Geochemistry
Geochemistry is the scientific study of the chemical composition and chemical processes that govern planetary bodies, especially Earth but also other planets, moons, and asteroids. It encompasses understanding how elements distribute themselves within rocks, minerals, water, and gases in the earth's crust, mantle, and core. Geochemistry incorporates aspects of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to analyze geological samples and interpret data. As a component of cosmochemistry, it focuses on understanding how Earth's composition compares with other celestial bodies in our solar system, thereby providing insights into the origins and evolution of planetary systems. By studying geochemical processes, scientists can reconstruct past environmental conditions, understand natural hazards, and assess resources for economic exploitation.
