The Renaissance was a period of cultural, artistic, political and economic rebirth following the Middle Ages, beginning in Italy in the late 14th century and spreading throughout Europe by the 16th century. It is characterized by a revival of learning based on classical sources, the development of linear perspective in painting, and a new interest in humanism and individual achievement. In English culture, the Renaissance brought about significant changes in literature, education, and language. Modern English owes much to the vocabulary and grammar that were developed during this time. The Renaissance was a transformative period in history, marking the transition from medieval to modern Europe and laying the foundation for many of the cultural and intellectual achievements of the following centuries.
