Mythology

Definition of Mythology as it relates to Cultures, Culture of United States, Folklore

Mythology: A body of myths, often centered around deities or heroes, which serves to explain fundamental aspects of reality and society within a particular culture. It encompasses stories, beliefs, customs, and rituals that have been passed down through generations, reflecting shared values, fears, hopes, and understanding of the natural world. While distinct from folklore in its religious connotations, mythology shares similarities as both are deeply rooted in cultural identity and tradition. Not confined to ancient civilizations, mythology continues to evolve and persist even within contemporary societies like that of the United States, where it intertwines with popular culture, literature, and film.
