Definition of Synaptic Plasticity as it relates to Science, Neuroscience

Synaptic plasticity refers to the brain's ability to adapt and change over time by modifying the strength and efficiency of connections between neurons, known as synapses. It is a fundamental mechanism underlying learning, memory, and cognition in neuroscience, encompassing various forms of short-term and long-term changes in synaptic efficacy. These changes can occur through pre- or post-synaptic mechanisms, including alterations in the release of neurotransmitters, changes in the number and sensitivity of receptors, and remodeling of synaptic structures. Synaptic plasticity is also implicated in various neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy, making it an important area of research in both basic and clinical neuroscience.
