Cloud Computing

Definition of Cloud Computing as it relates to Science, Engineering, Software Engineering

Cloud computing is a model for delivering information technology services where resources are retrieved from the internet through web-based tools and applications, rather than a direct connection to a server. This includes servers, storage, databases, networking, software, analytics, and intelligence over the internet (“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale. It is an extension of virtualization, where software runs on a virtual machine instead of directly on the underlying hardware. In this case, the cloud computing environment allows for easy and quick resource allocation from one central location, without the need for additional infrastructure or maintenance on the user side. The development and management of these resources falls under the umbrella of software engineering, while the broader categories of science and engineering provide the foundational principles that make cloud computing possible.
