Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why. It is a key component of public health and informs policy decisions and evidence-based practices by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive healthcare. Epidemiologists investigate patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. They may study the distribution of a particular disease or risk factor, such as obesity or smoking, and how it changes over time. This information is used to develop and evaluate interventions to improve public health, such as vaccination programs or smoking cessation initiatives. Epidemiology is also used in clinical research to understand the causes of diseases and to test new treatments. Overall, epidemiology is a critical tool for improving population health and preventing disease.
