Sexual Health

Definition of Sexual Health as it relates to Health, Adolescent Health

Sexual health refers to an individual's physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It encompasses a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the ability to have pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For adolescents, sexual health is an important aspect of their overall health and development. Adolescent sexual health includes understanding and making informed decisions about sexual activity, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It also involves developing healthy relationships, building self-esteem, and learning to communicate effectively about sexuality. Sexual health is a critical component of overall health and well-being. It is closely linked to reproductive health and encompasses issues such as family planning, maternal and child health, and the prevention and treatment of STIs, including HIV. Addressing adolescent sexual health requires a comprehensive approach that includes accurate information, access to services, and supportive environments that promote healthy behaviors.
