Assistive Technology

Definition of Assistive Technology as it relates to Education, Vocational Education, Education Technology

Assistive Technology refers to devices, software, and equipment that are used to improve the functional abilities of individuals with disabilities. It encompasses a wide range of tools designed to help people with various types of impairments, such as visual, auditory, cognitive, or physical disabilities, to perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible for them to do on their own. In the context of education and vocational education, assistive technology can play a critical role in leveling the playing field for students with special needs, enabling them to access curriculum materials, communicate effectively, and demonstrate their knowledge and skills in ways that are comparable to their non-disabled peers. Education technology, on the other hand, refers more broadly to the use of digital tools and platforms in educational settings, including but not limited to assistive technology.
