Definition of Assistive Technology as it relates to Education, Special Education, Biology Education

Assistive Technology refers to devices and services designed to help individuals with disabilities perform tasks that might otherwise be difficult or impossible. In the context of education, assistive technology can level the playing field for students with special needs by providing tools that enhance learning and communication. For example, in biology education, a student with a visual impairment may benefit from software that magnifies textbooks or a talking scientific calculator. Assistive technology encompasses a wide range of products, including hardware (such as wheelchairs and hearing aids), software (such as text-to-speech programs and communication apps), and specialized instructional materials (such as large print books and braille displays). By providing students with the tools they need to succeed, assistive technology can help ensure that all learners have equal access to education.
