Opiliones

Definition of Opiliones as it relates to Animals, Arachnids, Amblypygi, Harvestmen

Opiliones, also known as harvestmen, are a group of arachnids belonging to the order with the same name. They are characterized by their small, oval-shaped bodies and long, spindly legs. Unlike other arachnids such as spiders and scorpions, Opiliones lack venom glands and do not possess the ability to spin webs. They are typically found in leaf litter and other humid environments, where they feed on small insects and other arthropods. Harvestmen have a unique reproductive system, with males depositing spermatophores on the ground for females to pick up and insert into their genital openings. Despite their somewhat frightening appearance, harvestmen are generally harmless to humans.
