Weddell Seals
Weddell seals are a species of true seals that are found in the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica. They are known for their distinctive V-shaped nostrils and dark grey fur with light spots. Weddell seals are the most southerly breeding mammal and are able to dive to great depths in search of food, such as fish and squid. They are well-adapted to their icy environment, with a thick layer of blubber for insulation and large, paddle-like flippers for swimming efficiently. These seals are known for their vocalizations, which include calls, trills, and growls that they use to communicate with each other.
