Strikeouts
A strikeout occurs in baseball or softball when a batter swings and misses a pitch, fails to swing at a pitch within the strike zone, or hits a foul ball that is caught by the catcher before it hits the ground. The pitcher is credited with a strikeout, while the batter is recorded as having struck out. Strikeouts are a common statistic used to measure a pitcher's effectiveness in getting batters out.
