Island Foxes

Island foxes are a unique species of small carnivorous mammals that are only found on six of the eight Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. They are known for their small size, typically weighing between 3 to 6 pounds, and their distinctive rust-colored fur. Island foxes are highly adaptable animals, able to thrive in a variety of habitats including grasslands, coastal scrub, and forests. They are primarily nocturnal and are skilled hunters, feeding on a diet of small mammals, insects, fruits, and plants. Island fox populations faced severe declines in the early 2000s due to predation from non-native species and disease, but conservation efforts have helped stabilize their numbers in recent years.
