Channel Island Foxes

Channel Island Foxes are small, endemic foxes found on the Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California. They are known for their small size, typically weighing between 2 to 6 pounds, and their unique color variations, including gray, black, and rust. These foxes are highly adaptable and have evolved in isolation on the islands, resulting in distinct subspecies with slight variations in appearance and behavior. Channel Island Foxes play a crucial role in the ecosystem of the islands, preying on rodents and insects, and are considered a keystone species. Due to habitat loss, introduced predators, and disease, these foxes have faced population declines and are classified as endangered species, with conservation efforts in place to protect and restore their populations.
