Eastern Orthodox is a branch of Christianity that emphasizes the unity of God in three persons - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It traces its origins to the early Christian church in the eastern Mediterranean region and maintains many traditional practices and rituals. Eastern Orthodox adherents believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, his resurrection, and the sacraments as means of grace. The faith is characterized by a strong devotion to Mary, the mother of Jesus, and the saints, as well as an emphasis on liturgical worship, iconography, and monasticism. Eastern Orthodoxy has a hierarchical structure, with the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople serving as the "first among equals" of the autocephalous (self-governing) churches that make up the communion.
