Butterflies
Butterflies are brightly colored, winged insects that belong to the order Lepidoptera, which also includes moths. They have slender bodies and large, often intricately patterned wings. Unlike moths, butterflies are typically active during the day and can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including meadows, forests, and gardens. Butterflies undergo a remarkable transformation during their life cycle, known as metamorphosis. They begin their lives as eggs, which hatch into caterpillars, or larvae. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of plants and eventually transform into pupae, or chrysalises, where they undergo a series of changes to become adult butterflies. Butterflies play an important role in the ecosystem as pollinators, helping to spread pollen from flower to flower as they feed on nectar. They are also an important food source for many animals, including birds and bats. In this hierarchy, butterflies fall under the broader category of moths, which is a group of insects characterized by their soft, often drab-colored wings. Moths, in turn, are a type of beetle, which is a large and diverse group of insects that includes many familiar species such as ladybugs and fireflies. Beetles are one of the most successful groups of animals on Earth, with more than 350,000 known species. Together, moths and butterflies make up the order Lepidoptera, which is a diverse group of insects that includes more than 180,000 described species.
