Northern Cardinals
Northern Cardinals are bright red birds with a distinctive crest on their head and a black face mask. They are found in North America, primarily in the eastern half of the United States and Canada. These birds prefer dense shrubs and woodland edges for habitat and are known to visit backyard feeders. Northern Cardinals have a loud, clear whistle that can be heard year-round. Their diet consists mainly of seeds, fruits, and insects. During breeding season, the male cardinal can be particularly territorial, fiercely defending its territory against intruders. The Northern Cardinal is a non-migratory bird, meaning it stays in the same area throughout the year. This species plays an important role in the ecosystem as both a pollinator and seed disperser.
