Software Engineering

Definition of Software Engineering as it relates to Software, Software Development, Software Maintenance

Software engineering, as part of software maintenance, focuses on the application of systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approaches to development, operation, and maintenance of software. It involves the establishment and use of sound engineering principles in order to economically obtain software that is reliable and works efficiently on real machines. The field encompasses the entire spectrum of software development, from the identification of a need for software, through its specification, design, implementation, testing, release, maintenance, and ultimately, its retirement. It draws upon knowledge from several areas, including computer science, systems engineering, project management, mathematics, and operations research, in order to produce high-quality, cost-effective software. Software engineering is the foundation for ensuring that software can be built and maintained with a level of quality and efficiency that meets or exceeds user expectations.
