Social Norms
Social norms are informal rules governing behavior within a group, community, or society. They arise from shared values and beliefs that shape attitudes, behaviors, and expectations in various contexts, including cultures and religious practices. In the United States culture, social norms reflect democratic ideals, individualism, and diversity, influencing interactions, communication styles, and etiquette. Social norms may include appropriate attire, greetings, personal space, punctuality, and expressions of gratitude or apology. They evolve over time through socialization, learning from others, and adaptation to changing circumstances, yet they also maintain stability by reinforcing group identity and cohesion. Social norms can both facilitate and hinder social change, as they represent collective wisdom but may also perpetuate inequality and stereotypes. Understanding social norms is essential for effective communication, building relationships, and navigating diverse cultural and religious landscapes.
