Mucosal Immunology

Definition of Mucosal Immunology as it relates to Science, Genetics, Immunology

Mucosal Immunology is the study of the immune responses that occur at the mucosal surfaces, which are the moist linings of various body openings such as the nose, lungs, mouth, and gastrointestinal tract. These regions are constantly exposed to foreign substances, including potential pathogens, and therefore have evolved complex mechanisms to protect against infection while also tolerating harmless antigens. Mucosal Immunology is a critical area of research because mucosal surfaces are the primary sites of entry for many infectious agents, and understanding how immune responses are regulated at these sites can inform the development of vaccines and other therapeutics to prevent or treat infectious diseases. Additionally, mucosal immunity plays an important role in maintaining homeostasis and preventing chronic inflammation, making it relevant to other areas of Genetics and Science as well.
