Definition of Music Therapy as it relates to Music

Music Therapy refers to the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. The music therapist utilizes music and its various properties, such as rhythm, melody, and harmony, to facilitate physical, emotional, cognitive, and social change in clients. Music therapy can be used to address a wide range of needs, including but not limited to: physical rehabilitation, pain management, stress reduction, trauma recovery, communication skills, and overall quality of life. The music therapist works with clients of all ages and abilities, tailoring interventions to meet the unique needs and goals of each individual. Through active music making and musical experiences, music therapy aims to promote growth, self-expression, and well-being.
