Definition of American Literature as it relates to Literature, Poetry, 20th Century Literature

American Literature, as a part of 20th Century Literature, encompasses works produced by writers from the United States during this time period. This literature reflects the social, political, and cultural changes that occurred throughout the century, providing insight into the American experience. Poetry, a form of literary art that uses aesthetic and rhythmic qualities of language to evoke meanings in addition to, or in place of, the prosaic ostensible meaning, is also represented within this subcategory.
