Composting

Definition of Composting as it relates to Gardening

Composting refers to the natural process of breaking down organic materials, such as food scraps and yard waste, into nutrient-rich soil amendment. This practice not only reduces waste in landfills but also enriches garden soil, improves its structure and texture, and promotes healthy plant growth. Composting can be done through various methods including pile composting, bin composting, tumbler composting, and worm composting (vermicomposting). The end product is a dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling material that can be added to garden beds, potting soil, or used as a top dressing. Composting also helps in suppressing plant diseases and pests, improving water retention, and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. It is an environmentally friendly and sustainable gardening practice that promotes circular economy by turning waste into a valuable resource.
