Fertilizers

Definition of Fertilizers as it relates to Gardening

Fertilizers are essential components in gardening, serving as nutrient providers to promote plant growth and health. They enrich soil with necessary macronutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) - often represented as N-P-K ratios on product labels - along with secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, plus micronutrients like iron, manganese, zinc, copper, boron, and molybdenum. Organic fertilizers are derived from natural sources such as manure, compost, or bone meal; inorganic fertilizers are synthetically produced. Slow-release fertilizers gradually provide nutrients over time, while fast-acting ones offer immediate but shorter-term benefits. Liquid fertilizers can be easily applied and quickly absorbed by plants, while granular ones take longer to break down and release nutrients. Foliar feeding involves directly applying liquid fertilizer onto leaves for rapid uptake. Choosing the right fertilizer depends on factors like plant type, soil conditions, and growth stage.
