Definition of Occupational Therapy as it relates to Education, Special Education, Special Services Education

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well-being through occupation. The primary goal of OT is to enable people to participate in the activities of everyday life. OT interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching new skills, and educating clients and their families. In the context of education, special education, and special services education, occupational therapists work with students who have physical, sensory, or cognitive disabilities to help them develop and improve their academic performance, social skills, and daily living activities. OTs collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to create individualized education plans that address the unique needs of each student and promote their successful participation in school and community life.
