Definition of Instructional Methods as it relates to Education, Adult Education, Instructional Design

Instructional methods encompass a variety of strategies employed in education and training contexts, both formal and informal, across age ranges from children to adults, and within diverse disciplines. These methods are intentionally designed and systematically applied to facilitate learning experiences that promote knowledge acquisition, skill development, critical thinking, problem solving, and behavior change. The selection of instructional methods is informed by the characteristics of learners, content, learning objectives, available resources, and contextual factors. Instructional methods can be categorized into various types such as didactic, experiential, interactive, constructivist, problem-based, and self-directed learning among others. The application of instructional methods is integral to the field of instructional design, which seeks to create effective, engaging, and efficient learning environments by integrating research-based theories, models, and technologies.
