Baroque Art
Abstract Expressionism is an artistic movement characterized by non-representational, non-figurative compositions and emphasis on spontaneous, automatic, or subconscious creation. It emerged in New York City during the 1940s and 1950s as a response to European Surrealism and other modernist movements. Abstract Expressionists often used bold brushstrokes, vivid colors, and expressive mark-making to create dynamic and emotionally charged works that defied traditional notions of beauty and form. This movement encompasses various styles, including Action Painting and Color Field painting, which differ in their techniques and aesthetic approaches but share a common commitment to abstraction and self-expression. The significance of Abstract Expressionism lies in its rejection of conventional artistic practices and its exploration of new forms of visual language that reflect the complexities and uncertainties of post-war America. As such, it remains an influential force in modern and contemporary art, inspiring generations of artists to push the boundaries of what is possible in painting, sculpture, and other mediums.
